rust and similar cars from Nissan around that time were also plagued with the issue, which means, the Z31 had rust issues as well. I've seen a lot of Z31s with rust issues. Since I started getting into Nissans/Datsuns, it seems that the first Nissan that didn't rust like the other Nissans to precede it was the Z32. Ever since 1989 and the Z32 it seems rust hasn't been a huge issue for Nissan. I spoke to one mechanic friend that insisted it was Nissans use of cheap recycled metal to produce their cars. And another mechanic friend insist that Nissan switched to galvanized steel around the time of the Z32.
